Wheels in Motion: Exploring Land Vehicles at Our Cambridge Nursery
At Monkey Puzzle Marleigh, one of Cambridge’s warmest and most welcoming day nurseries, every week brings a fresh theme for the children to explore. Over the last week, each room has delved into the theme of land vehicles, looking at vehicle names, the sounds they make and the jobs they do. From road safety in preschool to soapy car washes with our babies, every age group found their own way into the topic.
Preschool: Road Safety and Emergency Vehicles
Our preschool children have been learning about road safety and emergency vehicles, which sparked plenty of discussion about traffic signs and symbols and what each of them means. That led naturally into how and why we keep ourselves safe when crossing the road, practising stop, look and listen. These are skills children carry with them long after they leave the nursery gates, and they are exactly the kind of confidence and awareness that helps a child feel ready for school and for the world around them.
Toddler Room: Painting, Sorting and Construction Play
In the toddler room, the children used vehicles to create marks in paint, rolling wheels and tyres across the paper to see what patterns they could make. Alongside the artwork, they grouped the vehicles by colour, size and number of wheels, which is early maths in disguise and a lovely way to build sorting and counting skills. They then role-played a construction site with high-vis jackets, diggers and trucks, developing language, imagination and the give and take of playing alongside others.
Babies: First Words, Sounds and Sensory Fun
Our babies were supported to listen to loud sirens and watch flashing lights, with our team focusing on words such as “oh no”, “help” and “drive”. They also took part in soapy car washes and cardboard box train rides, which brought the theme to life through touch, sound and movement. Sensory experiences like these are how the very youngest children start to connect a sound with a meaning, and they are among the first building blocks of language and communication.
