School Readiness at Our Cambridge Nursery: Preparing Children for Primary School
At Monkey Puzzle Marleigh, we support children in learning a range of skills in order to prepare for a smooth transition into primary school and later on in life. Independence and Self-Care in Everyday Moments
Some of the most valuable preparation happens during the ordinary parts of the day. At mealtimes, children are encouraged to self-serve their own food and drink using tongs, spoons and jugs. They often help set up the tables, use cutlery to eat, and enjoy meaningful conversations with the children and adults around them. Children are also supported in dressing themselves as well as putting on their own coats and shoes, so the routines of a school day already feel familiar by the time they get there.
A Love of Learning Built Through Play
We support children in fostering a love for learning by providing a range of activities based on their own interests, from playdough and painting to outdoor climbing. Each of these quietly builds the hand strength and core strength that children need for writing later on, and because the activities follow what the children are already curious about, learning stays something they choose rather than something they are asked to do.
