Unearthing the Past: Pre-School Fossil Hunters and Seaside Explorers
Discovering Coastal Habitats and Rock Pool Creatures
At Monkey Puzzle Marleigh, we have been celebrating the end of summer by diving into an exciting “Beaches and Fossils” topic. To round up the sunny season before transitioning into autumn, our pre-school children spent time researching marine life and coastal habitats. Investigating rock pools and beach environments, the children eagerly discussed the living creatures they might find along the coastline, identifying crabs, sea snails, and sea anemones.
Pre-School Fossil Hunters Brush Away the Sands of Time
Following their study of coastal habitats, the children moved on to explore prehistoric history, discovering that fossils are fascinating clues left by plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Transforming into enthusiastic palaeontologists and fossil hunters, our pre-schoolers roleplayed archaeological digs in the sand. Using delicate paintbrushes, they carefully brushed away the sand to discover hidden animal bones, shells, and ancient fossils, practising patience and precision.
Sensory Discovery for Babies and Toddlers
In our baby and toddler rooms, our youngest learners engaged in rich, multi-sensory sand and water play. Experiencing how textures and weights change when water mixes with sand, the children dipped their hands into tactile sensory trays. Practitioners supported early language development by introducing rich descriptive vocabulary during play, reinforcing expressive words such as shell, slimy, smooth, and rough.
Learning Through Pre-School Fossil Exploration and Seaside Play
Activities like this support a wide range of areas of development while making learning enjoyable and engaging. Brushing away sand to reveal hidden fossils refines fine motor precision and hand-eye coordination, while exploring seaside habitats introduces early scientific concepts about habitats and prehistoric life. Sensory sand and water play encourages babies and toddlers to explore physical properties while building early descriptive vocabulary. Themed learning experiences inspire children to become curious, confident learners as they discover the wonders of the natural world.
How Themed Learning Helps Your Child
Topic weeks like this let children explore one idea in real depth, with every room approaching it at just the right level. For your child, that means learning through play that builds early science skills, language and communication, and a growing understanding of the world around them, all while having a genuinely good time. It’s one of the many ways our Cambridge nursery and childcare team supports every child’s development through the early years.
