Learning About Pet Animals at Monkey Puzzle Marleigh

At Monkey Puzzle Marleigh, we love creating learning experiences that spark children’s curiosity while helping them develop important life skills. This week, our children have been exploring the wonderful world of pet animals through a variety of engaging activities, conversations and real-life experiences.

Discovering Our Favourite Pets

Our toddlers have been enjoying a range of hands-on activities inspired by caring for pets. Through imaginative role play, they have taken on the roles of pet owners, vets and animal carers, looking after dogs in kennels and helping poorly pets feel better.

Alongside their play, the children have been expanding their vocabulary by learning new words such as fur, whiskers, paws and habitat. Storybooks, flashcards and group discussions have helped bring these new words to life while encouraging children to ask questions and share their own experiences.

Learning Kindness and Responsibility

In our preschool room, the children have been exploring what it means to care for animals with kindness and respect. They have had thoughtful discussions about how pets have feelings, need plenty of rest and rely on us to look after them gently.

Their curiosity led to some fantastic conversations, with children asking questions such as why cats purr and what it means when a dog wags its tail. These discussions encouraged empathy, communication and a greater understanding of the needs of living animals.

A Very Special Visit

One of the highlights of the week was the opportunity to meet some friendly guinea pigs. Seeing the animals up close gave the children a chance to observe them carefully, practise gentle handling and build their confidence around small pets. Experiences like these help children develop respect for animals while making their learning even more memorable and exciting.

Bringing Learning from Home

We also invited families to share photographs of their own pets, giving the children the chance to talk about the animals they care for at home. It was wonderful to see them proudly sharing stories about feeding, playing with and looking after their furry friends, helping to strengthen the connection between home and nursery learning.
