Diving Into Discovery: Exploring Sea Animals at Our Cambridge Nursery
This week at Monkey Puzzle Marleigh, one of Cambridge’s warmest and most nurturing day nurseries, children of every age dived into the theme of sea animals. From the baby room to preschool, each of our rooms explored the ocean in its own hands-on way, building curiosity, language, and confidence along the way.
A Sea of Sensory Fun in the Baby Room
Our youngest explorers dived in with all their senses. They squished and scooped their way through gloop, foam, and sand, discovering new textures with busy little hands and feet. They also used tweezers to rescue toy sharks tangled in spaghetti, a playful challenge that quietly builds the hand strength and coordination behind early writing. To finish, we sang one of our all-time favourites, Baby Shark, using signing and actions to bring the song to life.
Toddlers Making a Splash
Our toddlers set off on an underwater adventure, using nets to discover the creatures swimming in the sea. Each catch sparked new conversations about how the animals look and move. Together they learned how dolphins leap, stingrays glide, and jellyfish drift in the current, growing their vocabulary and their wonder at the natural world.
Curious Minds in Preschool
In preschool, the children took a closer look at how sea creatures move, eat, and protect themselves, weaving in counting and fine motor practice through hands-on, sea-themed activities. They were fascinated to discover how octopuses change colour to hide and how pufferfish puff up like a balloon, turning everyday curiosity into real early learning.
Why This Learning Matters for Your Child
Themed weeks like this one are about far more than a bit of ocean fun. As your child explores through sensory play, conversation, and discovery, they are building language, curiosity, fine motor skills, and early number confidence, the very foundations of happy, lifelong learning. It is one of the many ways we help every child at Monkey Puzzle Marleigh grow, explore, and thrive during their time with us.
